The pattern
Two unequal highs and two unequal lows daily with a range that can approach twenty feet — Cook Inlet’s famous bore-sized tides. The inlet’s mudflats and channels transform completely between tides.
Salmon runs
The Kenai River’s legendary king and sockeye runs push in on the big tides — the river mouth fishes the tide like a clock. Halibut wait in the deeper inlet water; the beaches give up clams on the minus lows.
Boating
Cook Inlet demands full respect: extreme currents, shifting mudflats, and fast weather. Time crossings with the tide tables and local knowledge. For the state, see our Alaska tide guide.
