The pattern

Two unequal highs and two unequal lows daily with around eight feet of range. The island’s bays and passages run their own local currents — Shelikof Strait’s tidal streams are famous among mariners.

A fishing port

Kings, sockeyes, silvers, and pinks run the island’s rivers on the tides — the Karluk and Ayakulik are legends. Halibut, cod, and rockfish fill the offshore grounds; the commercial fleet works it all year-round.

Boating

Island water with ocean exposure: check swell and wind with the tide. The town’s harbor is the staging point for the island’s road-system bays. For the state, see our Alaska tide guide.
