The pattern
A mixed semidiurnal tide with around three feet of range — generous for the Gulf’s Big Bend. The island channels run current on the change; the vast flats drain slowly.
Clams and reds
Cedar Key’s clam aquaculture leases work the tide’s rhythm. Redfish and speckled trout haunt the seagrass flats and creek mouths; the deeper channels give up grouper within sight of the islands.
Boating
The flats go skinny fast outside the marked channels — the islands’ back side is the careful route. Stone crabbers work the deeper water in season. For the wider Gulf, see our Gulf Coast tide guide.
