The pattern
Small, often diurnal-leaning tides of around two feet — classic Florida panhandle water. Some days bring just one high and one low; the shallow bay amplifies wind effects, so a strong sea breeze can push water higher than the table says.
Scallops and the bay
St. Joseph Bay’s seagrass flats host the summer scallop season — snorkelers scoop bay scallops by hand in three to six feet of clear water. Redfish, speckled trout, and flounder work the same grass year-round; see our best time to fish tides guide.
Boating
St. Joseph Bay is shallow and grassy — run the marked channels and watch for shoals off Cape San Blas. The pass to the Gulf is narrow; favor daylight and a rising tide. For the region, see our Florida tides guide.
