The pattern
Small, often diurnal tides of around a foot — some days bring just one high and one low. On Matagorda Bay the wind moves as much water as the moon, so a hard south wind can push the bay well off the prediction — plan around the weather as much as the table.
Flats and the fleet
Port O’Connor is redfish and trout water — waders and kayaks work the bay’s grass flats and the Pass Cavallo jetties, and the town’s shrimp and oyster boats unload at the docks; see our best time to fish tides guide.
Boating
Matagorda Bay is shallow with shifting shoals — run the marked channels and watch your depth. Pass Cavallo to the Gulf is narrow and current-swept; favor daylight and a rising tide. For the region, see our Texas tides guide.
