The pattern
Small, often diurnal-leaning tides of around a foot — classic upper-Texas-coast water. Some days bring just one high and one low; a strong north wind can drain the bay’s flats a foot below the prediction, tide table or not.
Bay trout and redfish
Matagorda Bay is speckled-trout and redfish water — waders work the shorelines and the causeway lights at night. Lighthouse Beach’s bird sanctuary sits at the bay’s edge; see our best time to fish tides guide for the Texas-coast windows.
Boating
Matagorda Bay is big, shallow, and wind-driven — mind the spoil islands and the marked Intracoastal channel. The bay’s cuts to the Gulf shoal; favor daylight and local knowledge. For the region, see our Texas tides guide.
