Newport, Oregon Tide Chart

Newport — the Oregon Coast’s fishing capital on Yaquina Bay — runs an eight-foot mixed semidiurnal tide that sets the crab pot schedule, the salmon bite, and the bar report.

The pattern

Two unequal highs and two unequal lows daily with around eight feet of range. The bay’s tide lags the ocean slightly and the upper bay runs later still — crabbers and bay anglers time the inside water, not the beach.

Crab and salmon

Yaquina Bay is Dungeness country — pots soak on the slack, hauled before the ebb rips. Fall Chinook stage at the bay mouth, and the ocean troll fishery works the reef edges. The sea lions at the bayfront are the local crabbing critics.

Yaquina Bay bar

Like every Oregon bar, Yaquina’s demands respect: an ebb against ocean swell builds dangerous breakers. Cross on the flood or at slack, check the bar report, and watch the weather. For the region, see our Pacific Northwest tide guide.
