Port Angeles Tide Chart
Port Angeles guards the eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca, where a big mixed semidiurnal tide — eight feet or more — drives the salmon highway and rips real current past the harbor mouth.

The pattern
Two unequal highs and two unequal lows daily with eight-plus feet of range — bigger than Seattle’s, thanks to the Strait’s shape. The mixed pattern makes one high tide tower over the other, and the year’s lowest minus tides expose superb shoreline for beachcombing.
Salmon and halibut
The Strait is a salmon freeway — Chinook and coho bound for Puget Sound and the Fraser River — and the tide change concentrates the bite. Halibut anglers work the banks on the moving tides. Just east, Dungeness Spit and Sequim Bay give the town’s namesake crab; check seasons before dropping pots.
Currents and crossings
The Strait runs hard: an ebb pouring west against a westerly wind stacks up a steep, uncomfortable sea, and the tidal streams off the harbor mouth deserve respect in a small boat. The Black Ball ferry to Victoria, BC times its crossings with the current in mind. For the region, see our Pacific Northwest tide guide.
