New York Tide Chart
New York Harbor runs on a semidiurnal tide of four to five feet — and its effects reach far beyond the harbor, pushing tidal current miles up the Hudson and whipping through the East River.

The pattern
Two highs and two lows daily, roughly four to five feet at The Battery. The Hudson is tidal far upstream — past Poughkeepsie — so upriver anglers and boaters still live by the tide table. Spring tides around full and new moons add extra range and current.
Striped bass
The spring striped bass run up the Hudson is one of the great urban fisheries in America, and the fish ride the tides — many regulars fish the change of tide specifically. Fall brings another shot as bass funnel back out through the harbor. The East River and the harbor’s structure fish well on moving water year-round.
Currents and boating
The East River — really a tidal strait — can run several knots at Hell Gate on a big exchange; time it with the current or wait for slack. Harbor boaters should mind the ferry lanes and the tide rips around the Battery. For the region, see our Mid-Atlantic tide guide.
