The pattern

Two highs and two lows daily with two to three feet of range — small, but the rips are mighty: the tide ripping past Montauk Point and around the island’s rocky structure creates the current seams stripers hunt. The south side and the Sound side fish different stages.

Surfcasting capital

Fall is the main event: striped bass migrating past the Point, blitzing in the surf and the rips, with bluefish and false albacore in the mix. The rocks demand cleats and respect — fish the moving water, and never turn your back on the ocean. The charter fleet works the same rips for bass and fluke.

Boating

Montauk Inlet and the Point’s rips deserve the usual inlet respect — the tide rips here are the attraction and the hazard. For the region, see our New England tide guide.
