The pattern
Two highs and two lows daily with around seven feet of range — big water for the western Sound. The tide funnels toward the East River and Hell Gate, where the currents rip several knots.
Academy waterfront and stripers
The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s training ships line the waterfront — midshipmen drill on the same tide you fish. Striped bass and fluke work the shorelines on moving water; our best time to fish tides guide covers the windows.
Boating
The western Sound is crowded, commercial water — tugs, barges, and ferries share the channel. Steer clear of Hell Gate’s currents unless you know them. For the region, see our New England tides guide.
