The pattern

Two unequal highs and two unequal lows daily with around nine feet of range — big river-mouth water. The tide pushes up the Columbia past Baker Bay and the Long Beach Peninsula, then ebbs hard against the river’s flow — the bar and the bay both feel the swing.

Salmon and the Graveyard

Ilwaco is one of the Northwest’s great salmon ports — the charter fleet runs the bar for Chinook and coho when the river mouth cooperates. Cape Disappointment State Park, next door, overlooks the bar where hundreds of ships have wrecked; see our best time to fish tides guide.

Boating

The Columbia Bar is the boss — cross only on a favorable tide and a calm forecast, and mind the Coast Guard’s bar restrictions. Baker Bay itself is shallow with shifting shoals outside the channel. For the region, see our Pacific Northwest tides guide.
