The pattern
A semidiurnal tide that rarely reaches a foot — the Caribbean’s signature micro-tide. Easterly trade swell and passing tropical waves dominate the water’s movement.
Bio bay and fish
Laguna Grande’s bioluminescent dinoflagellates glow brightest on dark nights — the moon phase matters more here than the tide. Inshore, tarpon and snook work the mangrove channels; offshore, the canyons give up billfish.
Boating
Fajardo is the ferry hub for Vieques and Culebra — book around the sea state, not the tide. The reef passes need local knowledge. For the region, see our Puerto Rico & Caribbean tide guide.
