The pattern
Two unequal highs and two unequal lows daily with around seven feet of range at Charleston. The bay’s long arms run later than the entrance — up-bay crabbers and anglers should allow for the lag.
Crab and salmon
The bay is an Oregon crabbing stronghold — Dungeness on the lower bay’s tides — and fall Chinook push the rivers on the big tides. The jetties give up rockfish and surfperch; clammers work the tideflats on the minus lows.
Boating
The Coos Bay bar commands the usual Oregon respect: check the bar report with the tide. Inside, the bay’s channels are well-marked. For the region, see our Pacific Northwest tide guide.
