Bridgeport — Connecticut’s largest city, on the western Sound — sees seven-foot semidiurnal tides, among the biggest in Long Island Sound, driving a hard-fighting striper and bluefish bite.

The pattern
Two highs and two lows daily with around seven feet of range — the western Sound amplifies the tide. Black Rock Harbor and the Housatonic mouth run strong current on the change.
Sound fishing
Striped bass and bluefish blitz the harbors and the reefs on moving water — the fall run is the main event. Blackfish (tautog) own the rockpiles; fluke work the sandy edges in summer.
Boating
The big range means minding depths at low water in the harbor’s shallower corners. The ferry to Port Jefferson crosses the Sound’s mid-basin. For the region, see our New England tide guide.
