The pattern
Two highs and two lows daily with about three feet of range — modest, but the Thames River runs current on the change and the Race at the Sound’s eastern end rips with the tide.
Stripers and fluke
The Thames and the harbor hold striped bass through the seasons; fluke and blackfish work the rocky structure. The ferries to Block Island and Orient Point cross the Race — the Sound’s famous rip — where the tide stacks bait.
Boating
The Thames is a working river — mind the submarine base security zones and the ferry lanes. The Race demands tide timing. For the region, see our New England tide guide.
