The pattern

Two highs and two lows daily with around three feet of range — gentle lower-Chesapeake water. The tide pushes up the York River past the battlefield bluffs, then ebbs back toward the bay — the wind moves nearly as much water as the moon here.

Battlefield and riverfront

Yorktown’s battlefield and the Victory Monument mark the 1781 siege, and the riverfront’s shops and the beach at Yorktown draw visitors year-round; see our best time to fish tides guide for the river windows.

Boating

The York River’s channel is the deep water — the surrounding flats shoal fast, and the Coleman Bridge’s opening schedule governs upriver trips. Summer thunderstorms build fast over the bay. For the region, see our Mid-Atlantic tides guide.
