The pattern

Two highs and two lows daily with around four feet of range — bay-side water. The tide floods Chincoteague Bay and the marsh guts, then drains the flats around Tom’s Cove — the current in the inlets matters more than the height.

Ponies and refuge

The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge protects Assateague’s southern end, where the wild ponies roam — the July Pony Swim has run since 1925. Next door, rockets rise from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility; see our best time to fish tides guide for the bay windows.

Boating

The bay’s channels are narrow and shifting — follow the marks through the marsh and mind the shoals at the inlets. The ocean side is open Atlantic with real surf. For the region, see our Mid-Atlantic tides guide.
