Norfolk Tide Chart

Norfolk — home of the world’s largest naval base — sits where the Chesapeake meets Hampton Roads on a roughly three-foot semidiurnal tide that runs the region’s fishing and shipping.

The pattern

Two highs and two lows daily with about three feet of range at Sewells Point — bigger than up-bay Baltimore, smaller than the oceanfront. The three rivers (Elizabeth, Nansemond, James) and the bay all answer to this station with local lags.

Stripers and flounder

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel complex and the harbor’s structure hold striped bass through the cold months — some of the East Coast’s best winter striper fishing — while flounder and speckled trout work the flats in warmer water. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is the landmark structure fishery.

Boating a working harbor

This is a busy Navy and commercial port — small boats should mind the channels, security zones, and big-ship traffic. The tide sets the current at the bridge-tunnel crossings. For the wider Bay, see our Chesapeake Bay tide guide.
