The pattern

Two unequal highs and two unequal lows daily with around seven feet of range — solid Gulf of Alaska water. The tide swings through the bay and past the Situk River mouth, where the salmon stack up on the flood.

Surf and salmon

Yakutat is one of the few true surf towns in Alaska — the beaches catch open-Pacific swell, best surfed on the right tide. The Situk River’s famous steelhead and salmon runs move on the tide; our best time to fish tides guide covers the windows.

Boating

Yakutat Bay is big, cold, exposed water with glaciers calving nearby — the weather rules everything. Small boats stay close and watch the tide change. For the region, see our Alaska tides guide.
