The pattern
Two unequal highs and two unequal lows daily with around twelve feet of range — big Inside Passage water. The tide floods Taiya Inlet and the Lynn Canal fjord system, and the currents run hard through the narrows on the change.
Gold Rush port
Skagway boomed in 1898 as the jumping-off point for the Klondike — today cruise ships line the waterfront all summer. Anglers work the inlet for salmon and halibut on the moving tide; see our best time to fish tides guide for timing the bite.
Boating
The fjords are deep, cold, and dramatic — glaciers nearby and weather that changes fast. Mind the strong tidal currents and the cruise-ship traffic near town. For the region, see our Alaska tides guide.
