Tolchester Beach — the Kent County shoreline on the Chesapeake’s eastern shore, once a grand steamboat resort — answers to a small semidiurnal tide of around a foot and a half, where the wind moves nearly as much water as the moon.

The pattern
Two highs and two lows daily with only about a foot and a half of range — small upper-Chesapeake tides. The wind is the real water mover here; a stiff blow can pile water up or drain it out a foot either way, tide table or not.
Resort history and crabs
Steamers once ferried Baltimore crowds to Tolchester’s amusement beach — today it’s a quiet shoreline of private beaches. The creeks and shallows give up blue crabs and perch; see our crabbing tide guide for running lines on the tide.
Boating
The eastern-shore shallows are wide and unforgiving — mind the marked channels and your depth. Sailors love the reach across the Bay to Annapolis. For the region, see our Chesapeake Bay tides guide.
