The pattern
Two highs and two lows daily with around five feet of range — the river mouth amplifies the tide. The Cape Fear’s shipping channel runs current on the change.
River mouth fishing
Red drum haunt the river’s creeks and the inlet’s shoals on moving water; speckled trout work the marsh edges. The nearshore reefs give up flounder and sheepshead; the surf fishes blues and Spanish.
Boating
The Cape Fear inlet is a working ship channel — mind the big ships and the current. The Intracoastal threads behind the barrier islands. For the region, see our Mid-Atlantic tide guide.
