The pattern

Two highs and two lows daily with about three feet of range at Beaufort. The inlet runs the area’s strongest current; the sounds behind the barrier islands — Bogue, Back — run their own delayed rhythm.

Inshore and offshore

Red drum and speckled trout haunt the marsh creeks and the inlet’s shoals on moving water; the nearshore reefs hold flounder and sheepshead. Offshore, the fleet runs Beaufort Inlet for wahoo, tuna, and marlin when the Stream’s close.

Boating

Beaufort Inlet is well-marked but shoals — respect the channel. The Intracoastal threads the sounds behind the beaches. For the region, see our Mid-Atlantic tide guide.
