The pattern

Two highs and two lows daily with around five feet of range. The Hook’s ocean side and the bay side run different stages — the inlet’s rips build on the tide change.

Striper highway

The fall striper migration streams past the Hook — surfcasters work the ocean beaches on moving water. Bluefish blitz the bay side; fluke and blackfish work the inlet’s rocks in season.

Boating

The Sandy Hook Channel is the harbor’s front door — mind the big-ship traffic. The bay’s shallows go skinny at low water. For the region, see our Mid-Atlantic tide guide.
