The pattern
Two highs and two lows daily with around three feet of range on the ocean side — and almost no tide at all deep inside Pamlico Sound. Oregon Inlet is one of the most dynamic inlets on the East Coast, shifting after every storm.
Charter-fishing capital
More offshore charters sail from Oregon Inlet than anywhere on the Outer Banks — yellowfin tuna, mahi, and marlin in summer, stripers in winter. The surf gives up red drum on moving water. Time the bite with our best time to fish tides guide.
Boating
The inlet shoals move constantly — the marked channel is gospel and local knowledge is gold. Time ocean crossings near slack and never trust last year’s waypoints. For the region, see our Southeast Atlantic tides guide.
