The pattern
Two highs and two lows daily with about three feet of range on the ocean side. The sound side is wind-driven more than tide-driven — sound anglers should watch the wind as closely as the table.
Sound and surf
The sound’s grass beds hold speckled trout and puppy drum in the shallows; the ocean beaches give up red drum, stripers, and bluefish on the tides. Oregon Inlet, to the south, is the offshore gateway.
Boating
The sound is big, shallow water — mind the flats outside the marks. The ocean side’s inlets demand respect. For the region, see our Mid-Atlantic tide guide.
