Hatteras — the village at the elbow of the Outer Banks, in the shadow of the Cape Hatteras lighthouse — fishes a three-foot semidiurnal tide where Pamlico Sound meets the Atlantic.

The pattern
Two highs and two lows daily with around three feet of range on the ocean side — and almost no tide at all deep inside Pamlico Sound. The inlets are the whole story: the tide rips through Hatteras Inlet twice a day.
Surf and sound
The Graveyard of the Atlantic is surf-fishing heaven — red drum, bluefish, and stripers on moving water along the beaches. The sound side gives up speckled trout and puppy drum in the marsh creeks.
Boating
Hatteras and Oregon Inlets shift constantly — the marked channel is gospel and the shoals move after every storm. Time inlet crossings near slack. For the region, see our Southeast Atlantic tides guide.
