The pattern
Two highs and two lows daily with only about two feet of range — gentle Norton Sound water. In winter the sea ice locks everything; the open-water tide season runs roughly June through October.
Iditarod and gold country
Nome is the finish line of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race every March, and the beaches still give up gold to recreational miners working the surf line. Summer salmon reach the Nome and Snake rivers on the tide — see our best time to fish tides guide.
Boating
Norton Sound is shallow and exposed — a short chop builds fast and the weather turns on a dime. Small boats stay close to shore and watch the sky as much as the tide. For the region, see our Alaska tides guide.
