The pattern
Two highs and two lows daily with around nine feet of range — strong river-mouth water. The tide pushes up the Merrimack past the waterfront and drains the Plum Island marshes, and the current at the jetties runs hardest mid-ebb and mid-flood.
River, stripers, and Plum Island
The Merrimack is striper country — the jetties and the river’s deep holes are famous spring and fall water. Plum Island’s refuge beaches and the Parker River marshes are birding landmarks; see our best time to fish tides guide for timing the river bite.
Boating
The Merrimack River mouth bar is one of New England’s most dangerous inlets — cross only near slack with local knowledge and the latest dredging report. Inside, the river is a lovely cruise to the waterfront docks. For the region, see our New England tides guide.
