The pattern

Two highs and two lows daily with around eight feet of range — big New England water. The Piscataqua is one of the fastest-flowing tidal rivers in the country, ripping past the downtown waterfront twice a day.

Seacoast fishing

Striped bass run the river on the tide; the rocky coast gives up tautog and pollock. The working harbor — tugs, tankers, and the naval shipyard — shares the river with some of the region’s best shore fishing.

Boating

The Piscataqua’s current is the boss — several knots on a big ebb, with standing waves at the bridges. Time harbor transits near slack. For the region, see our New England tides guide.
