Kawaihae Tide Chart
Kawaihae — the Big Island’s deep-draft harbor on the Kohala coast — fishes a gentle mixed tide of around two feet, the quiet water behind the island’s busy sportfishing fleet.

The pattern
A mixed semidiurnal tide with around two feet of range — small, predictable water. The harbor and the Kohala reefs run on the tide’s clock; the Alenuihaha Channel’s weather runs on its own.
Kohala coast
The harbor’s charter fleet works the blue water for marlin, ahi, and ono. The reefs and the Puako shoreline give up reef fish and ulua from shore.
Boating
The channel to Maui can build viciously — check marine forecasts before crossing, and mind the afternoon trades funneling around the Kohala mountains. For the islands, see our Hawaii tide guide.
