Hilo Tide Chart
Hilo looks out on the Big Island’s wet, green windward coast, where a small mixed semidiurnal tide — barely two feet — quietly times the reef fishing and the bay boating.

The pattern
A mixed semidiurnal tide with a range that often struggles to reach two feet — some days it barely registers. The two daily highs are unevenly matched, and Hilo Bay’s shape adds its own local quirks to the timing. Check the table rather than guessing.
Reef fishing
The reef fronting Hilo holds papio, ulua, and reef species that key on moving water, modest as it is — the tide change still concentrates bait. Wailoa Harbor and the bay’s mouths fish best with current. Whipping lures at dawn is the local art form.
Bay boating
Hilo Bay is open to the ocean’s moods: the tide matters less than the swell and the famous Hilo rain, but the harbor entrance still runs current on the change. Small boats should respect the bay’s exposure. For the island chain, see our Hawaii tide guide.
