The pattern
Two highs and two lows daily with around six feet of range — the St. Marys inlet’s jetties run the area’s strongest current. The backwaters behind Amelia fish a delayed rhythm.
Inlet and backwater
Redfish and speckled trout haunt the marsh creeks and the jetties on moving water; flounder and sheepshead work the rocks. The beaches give up whiting, pompano, and sharks in the surf.
Boating
The St. Marys entrance is a ship channel — mind the submarines and big ships. The Intracoastal runs behind the island. For the region, see our Southeast Atlantic tide guide.
