The pattern

Small, often diurnal-leaning tides of around two feet — classic lower-Chesapeake water. The wind moves as much water as the moon here, so a hard blow can push Tangier Sound well off the prediction.

Crabs and island ferries

Blue crabs — steamed, soft-shell, and in cakes — are the town’s identity, and the National Hard Crab Derby runs every Labor Day weekend. Ferries leave for Smith Island and Tangier Island from the city dock, and Janes Island State Park’s marshes are a kayaking maze; see our best time to fish tides guide.

Boating

Tangier Sound is shallow with shifting shoals — stay in the marked channels and watch your depth. Somers Cove Marina is one of the Chesapeake’s largest, with a straight shot to open water. For the region, see our Mid-Atlantic tides guide.
