The pattern

Two highs and two lows daily with around three feet of range — moderate Crystal Coast water predicted from the Duke Marine Lab station on Pivers Island. The tide floods Taylor Creek and drains the Rachel Carson Reserve marshes.

Wild horses and inshore fishing

Shackleford Banks’ wild horses graze the dunes a short boat ride away. Inshore, speckled trout and redfish work the marsh edges on the rising tide — our best time to fish tides guide covers the windows.

Boating

Beaufort Inlet is the deep, stable pass to the ocean here; the back waters are a maze of marked channels through the marsh. Mind the ferry routes to the islands. For the region, see our Southeast Atlantic tides guide.
