The pattern

Two unequal highs and two unequal lows daily with a range around seven feet — classic Puget Sound. The tide floods the bay and drains the beaches, and the currents stack up where the Sound narrows into the Strait.

Salmon and crab

Kings and coho stage off the town on the tide change; Dungeness crab pots soak the bay’s edges. The Wooden Boat Festival each September times its harbor events around the tide.

Boating

Admiralty Inlet runs hard on big exchanges — plan crossings near slack. The Strait side is open water; the bay side is sheltered but shoal in spots. For the region, see our Pacific Northwest tides guide.
