The pattern
Two unequal highs and two unequal lows daily with around eight feet of range. Guemes Channel and the island passes run hard on the big exchanges — slack water is the small boater’s friend.
Salmon and crab
The San Juan de Fuca salmon runs pass right by — kings and coho on the tide rips — while the bays give up Dungeness crab and spot shrimp on the slacks. Washington Park’s shoreline fishes perch and rockfish.
Boating
This is ferry country: the Anacortes–San Juan ferries run the channels daily. Time the passes with the current, not just the tide table. For the region, see our Pacific Northwest tide guide.
