Newport Beach Tide Chart

Newport Beach — Balboa’s surf, the Wedge’s famous waves, and one of the largest small-boat harbors on the West Coast — runs Southern California’s classic mixed semidiurnal tide, about five feet of range.

The pattern

Two unequal highs and two unequal lows daily with around five feet of range at Balboa Pier. The harbor breathes through its entrances on the tide, and the spring tides’ minus lows open fine tide pooling on the rocky stretches.

Harbor and surf fishing

The harbor’s structure holds calico bass, sand bass, and halibut fished on moving water; Balboa’s beach gives up surfperch and corbina. The Wedge is for watching — its shorebreak is no place to fish.

Boating

Newport Harbor is a small-boat playground; Upper Newport Bay’s ecological reserve is the quiet-water counterpoint. The town is also a main gateway to Catalina Island. For the region, see our Southern California tide guide.
