Long Beach Tide Chart

Long Beach — the Queen Mary’s harbor city between LA and Orange County — runs Southern California’s classic mixed semidiurnal tide, about five feet of range behind the breakwater.

The pattern

Two unequal highs and two unequal lows daily with around five feet of range. The massive breakwater calms the harbor but the tide still breathes through the entrances — and the spring tides’ minus lows open fine tide pooling on the rocky stretches.

Harbor fishing and Catalina

The harbor’s breakwaters and oil islands hold calico bass, sand bass, and halibut fished on moving water; Belmont Shore’s beach gives up surfperch. Long Beach is also a main gateway to Catalina Island — the ferries and sport boats run the channel daily.

Boating

Alamitos Bay and the harbor are the small-boat playgrounds; the LA/Long Beach port complex next door is serious ship traffic — stay clear of the channels. For the region, see our Southern California tide guide.
