The pattern
Two highs and two lows daily with four to five feet of range — the upper bay’s tide, a touch bigger than down-bay Newport as the water funnels in. The Taunton River runs later than the bay mouth.
Bay stripers
Mount Hope Bay’s bridges, channels, and the Battleship Cove waterfront hold striped bass through the seasons — the spring migration up the bay is the main event. Bluefish blitz when they’re in; tautog work the bridge structure.
Boating
The bay’s bridges mean minding clearances at high water — check the tide before the Braga Bridge. The Sakonnet River next door is the scenic route south. For the region, see our New England tide guide.
