The pattern

Two unequal highs and two unequal lows daily with around six feet of range — classic Sonoma Coast water. The tide floods Bodega Harbor through its narrow entrance, then drains the bay’s flats — the entrance current runs hardest on the change.

Crab pots and salmon

Bodega Bay is Dungeness crab country — the commercial fleet works the offshore pots in winter, and sport boats drop rings in the harbor. Salmon season brings the charter fleet out past the head, and the harbor’s docks serve the catch fresh; see our best time to fish tides guide.

Boating

The harbor entrance is narrow with a bar that breaks in a swell — favor slack water and daylight. Inside, Bodega Harbor is snug; outside is open Pacific with the Sonoma Coast’s rocks and fog. For the region, see our Central & Northern California tides guide.
