The pattern

Two highs and two lows daily with only around three feet of range — gentle island water. With so little swing, the current in the rips and around the island’s points matters more than the height — plan around the change.

Stripers and the Bluffs

Block Island is striper country — the rips off the North End and the southeast corner under the Southeast Light give up trophy bass on eels and plugs. The Mohegan Bluffs’ clay cliffs are the island’s landmark; see our best time to fish tides guide.

Boating

Great Salt Pond is the snug harbor — the breachway entrance demands respect in a swell. Old Harbor and New Harbor fill fast in summer, and Block Island Sound carries real current. For the region, see our New England tides guide.
