The pattern
Two highs and two lows daily with around eight feet of range — big Lowcountry water. The tide floods Port Royal Sound and the marsh creeks, then drains the oyster flats and the town’s waterfront — the swing is among the largest on the Atlantic coast.
Antebellum town and the Sound
Beaufort’s oak-shaded streets hold one of the South’s finest collections of antebellum homes, and the waterfront park looks over the sound to the barrier islands. Hunting Island’s beach and lighthouse sit just offshore; see our best time to fish tides guide.
Boating
Port Royal Sound is deep water, but the creeks and the Broad River shoal fast — follow the marks and favor a rising tide. Summer thunderstorms build fast over the marsh. For the region, see our Southeast Atlantic tides guide.
