The pattern

Two highs and two lows daily with six to seven feet of range at Broad Creek — the water floods and drains the island’s marsh creeks fast and far. The ocean beaches and the inland waterway answer to the same station with local lags.

Flood-tide redfish

The island’s signature fishery: at high water, redfish push into the spartina grass and tail in inches of water — sight-fishing at its finest, best on the bigger flood tides. Spotted seatrout and flounder work the creek mouths and oyster rakes on the moving water.

Shelter Cove and boating

Broad Creek’s marinas — Shelter Cove Harbour among them — are the launchpad for inshore trips and the Daufuskie Island ferries. The creeks go skinny at low water and the current rips on the change. For the region, see our Southeast Atlantic tide guide.
