The pattern
Two highs and two lows daily with around ten feet of range — big Penobscot Bay water. The tide floods the harbor and the bay’s island-dotted reaches, then drains the lobster pounds and mudflats on the ebb — dock lines need slack for a ten-foot swing.
Lobster boats and the breakwater
The Maine Lobster Festival fills the harbor every August, and the working fleet — lobster boats, windjammers, and the ferry to Vinalhaven — defines the waterfront. The mile-long Rockland Breakwater ends at its lighthouse, a classic low-tide walk; see our best time to fish tides guide.
Boating
Penobscot Bay is prime cruising water — island-hopping to Vinalhaven and North Haven — but fog is the summer hazard and the ledges hide just outside the marked channels. For the region, see our New England tides guide.
