The pattern
Two unequal highs and two unequal lows daily with around five feet of range — solid outer-coast water. The tide swings through Drakes Bay and floods the esteros, while the exposed headland takes the full Pacific swell.
Seals, oysters, and surf
Elephant seals haul out at Drakes Bay in winter; Tomales Bay, just north, grows the West Coast’s famous oysters in water the tide flushes twice daily. The beaches are classic low-tide exploring — our tide pooling guide covers the etiquette.
Boating
Tomales Bay is the sheltered launch; outside the point is open, unforgiving ocean where fog and swell rule. Kayakers ride the tide through the esteros. For the region, see our Central & Northern California tides guide.
