Great Lakes Water Levels: What Actually Moves the Water
If you're used to ocean tide charts, the Great Lakes take some recalibrating. There's a real, measurable tide here — but it's not what moves the water day to day.
The tide is real but tiny
NOAA has measured a genuine astronomical tide on the Great Lakes, but it amounts to roughly an inch or two of range — utterly overshadowed by other forces. We cover the physics of why in our do lakes have tides guide; the short version is that a lake simply isn't large enough for the moon's pull to create a noticeable bulge the way it does across an ocean basin.
Seiches: the real short-term mover
What actually swings Great Lakes water levels by feet in a matter of hours is a seiche — a standing wave that sloshes across a lake basin when strong, sustained wind or a fast-moving pressure system pushes water toward one shore. Lake Erie, being long, shallow, and oriented along its prevailing wind direction, is especially prone to large seiches; a strong wind event can raise water several feet on one shore while lowering it on the opposite shore at the same time.
Seasonal and multi-year swings
On top of daily wind effects, the lakes rise and fall over weeks and years based on precipitation, snowmelt, and evaporation — a slow cycle tracked separately by NOAA and the Army Corps of Engineers, and unrelated to both tide and seiche.
