The pattern

Two highs and two lows daily with a staggering eighteen-foot range — the Fundy effect funnels the Atlantic’s tide into this corner of Maine. The currents this moves are genuinely powerful: plan boat movements around slack, and never underestimate the water here.

A working waterfront

Eastport’s deep harbor and huge tidal range once made it a sardine-canning capital; today it’s salmon aquaculture, lobstering, and whale watching — finbacks and humpbacks feed the summer currents. The Old Sow whirlpool, the Western Hemisphere’s largest, churns nearby at certain tide stages.

Boating

This is serious tidal water: strong currents, big exchanges, and cold water demand respect and preparation. Time the narrows for slack. For the region, see our New England tide guide.
